Happy White Rabbi Day lovely readers! For me, the first of March signals the dawn of a new season. Here in the UK, a week of balmy weather has made it feel as though Spring has started already (though this time last year, we were almost knee-deep in snow!). The high street is already displaying it's Spring and Summer wares, while snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils are peeking their colourful heads above ground.

Speaking of daffodils... Today is Saint David's Day, the patron saint of Wales. It's said that Saint David lived for over 100 years, and performed several miraculous feats, including raising the ground he was standing on into a hill so that he people listening to him speak could hear more clearly.

Here's what else we can look forward to this month:

5th March - Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day)

Shrove Tuesday marks the start of Lent: the 40 days before Easter when traditionally Christians would fast. On this day, eggs, butter and stocks of fat were used up to ensure no temptations were present in the larder. Originating before the 16th century, the tradition has remained with us in England and evolved into Pancake Day when we look forward to enjoying the sweet (or savoury) treat!

7th March - World Book Day

The first Thursday of March is the date we celebrate World Book Day here in the UK. It is a day when we celebrate the written word and encourage literacy, particularly for our children.

I'll be working on a post about this over the weekend, but in the meantime check out the World Book Day website to learn more.

8th March - International Women's Day

International women's Day has been celebrated across the world on March 8th since women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917. On this day, we celebrate the amazing social, cultural, economic and political achievements of women, while campaigning for greater progress towards gender equality.

This year's campaign theme is #BalanceForBetter. As explained on the official website:
From grassroots activism to worldwide action, we are entering an exciting period of history where the world expects balance. We notice its absence and celebrate its presence.
We're all encouraged to post our #IWD2019 message on social media with our "hands out" balance pose for a strong call-to-action for others to also help forge a #BalanceforBetter.

For more information and to see what events are happening near you, be sure to check out the official International Women's Day website.

18th March - Saint Patrick's Day

Saint Patrick is the patron Saint of Ireland, who - according to legend - rid Ireland of snakes. Once a traditional feast day, it has evolved into a celebratory day where people around the world wear green or attend gatherings to eat Irish food and drinks.

31st March - British Summer Time begins!

At 1am, we'll turn our clocks forward one hour and lament the hour we'll miss in bed... Bu since it's the official start of Summer, we have a lot to look forward to!

As our schedules become even more busy, we often forget to take the time to enjoy the small things which make us happy. Simple experiences, such as enjoying a coffee with a friend or seeing a child's face light up as they smile, are moments which can make us feel more content about our lives. As the 100 Happy Days project explains:
The ability to appreciate the moment, the environment and yourself in it, is the base for the bridge towards long term happiness of any human being.
So here is my challenge: an you spare a minute or two, each day for 100 days, to document a happy moment in your life?

I have a confession to make: I'm addicted to stationery. Pretty notepads; pens in every thickness, style and colour; labels and stickers; pencil pots and cases to house my ever-growing collection... I'm one of those people who really needs to avoid walking past Paperchase after payday: even though most of my written work is typed, I'm still able to convince myself that I'll find some use for yet more vintage postcards or that stylish letter set!

Having become interested in the trend for monthly subscription boxes, Princess and I wondered if there were services available for us to purchase pretty stationery to satiate our cravings for paper. To our delight we discovered there were quite a few to which we could subscribe for regular parcels of notepaper, greetings cards, scrapbook ephemera and everything between!

In this post, you'll find 20+ such subscriptions for paper lovers, many of which offer international delivery. From greetings cards to novelty papers and even books, if you enjoy paper the way I do, you're sure to find a service to fulfil your needs!

The value of mothers has produced thousands of quotes, ranging from ancient proverbs to words uttered by those in positions of power. An avid reader, I turned my attentions to quotes found in literature to find a plethora of inspiring and heartfelt quotes concerning mothers and motherhood.

Here are fifty of my favourites, ranging from classic tomes to contemporary novels to celebrate the virtues of our mothers.

1. "All mothers are mothers of great people, and it is not their fault that life later disappoints them."
― Boris Pasternak, Dr. Zhivago

2. "My mother once told me, when you have to make a decision, imagine the person you want to become someday. Ask yourself, what would that person do?"
― Barry Deutsch, Hereville: How Mirka Met a Meteorite

3. "A good mother loves fiercely but ultimately brings up her children to thrive without her. They must be the most important thing in her life, but if she is the most important thing in theirs, she has failed."
― Erin Kelly, The Burning Air

This post features 25 of my favourite fairytale films to watch when the children are in bed. Far from pleasant bedtime stories, these films present adult themes, grim situations and a healthy dose of horror more akin to the gruesome tales of the original Brothers Grimm.

From contemporary re-workings of "Red Riding Hood" and "Beauty and the Beast" through to suggestions of Pied Pipers and a futuristic Pinocchio, these films speak of a darker side to the fairytale genre we grew to love as children.

As children we're all taught not to run with scissors and look both ways before crossing the road. Like these examples, most of what we learn about safety and accident prevention seems like common sense.

Since becoming a parent, learning about accident prevention and teaching my children to stay safe has become even more important. There is no single resource covering every aspect of safety we may encounter, and a great many tips which we may not immediately consider.

In this post I've collected 85 useful tips which may not immediately spring to mind in a situation which demands them. I hope you will find this resource useful, and perhaps learn something new which could one day help save a life.

We could all use a little inspiration from time to time: perhaps to brighten our thoughts on a dull day, to affirm uncertain actions or get ourselves out of a rut.
So I've collected 100 inspirational quotes from great women through history: females who have shaped our world, who have helped advance society or achieved great things.

I'm a firm believer that investing time and energy into a considered gift produces far more pleasure in the recipient than anything shop-bought! This holds true for Mother's Day in particular: I love to receive the handmade cards and gifts bestowed by my own children, and as an adult I like to create something special with my own hands to gift for Mum.

Since there's a good chance Mum reads my blog, I don't want to spoil the surprise of what I'm making this week, but instead will share a selection of beautiful and thoughtful gift ideas you and your children could create as gifts for Mothering Sunday.

The Art of Manliness is an incredibly popular men's interest site which is helping to revive "the lost art of manliness". Founded and curated by Brett McKay and his wife, Kate, the site offers a refreshing alternative to mainstream men's magazines by providing quality articles which aim to help it's readers "become better husbands, better men and better fathers" by looking to the past and exploring concepts of "manliness in action".

I've been a fan and subscriber of AoM for quite some time, and it came as no surprise to me that many regular readers are women. Though the site is directed at the male species, it seems the sheer quality and interestingness of the articles presented attract the attention of us ladies too.

Which led me to wonder - are there any alternatives to The Art of Manliness for women?

Personally I'm not a great fan of celebrating Valentine's Day, at least not in the grand way it is often celebrated now with huge gifts, overly priced chocolates and ridiculously expensive trips to the restaurant (where on any other day a booking for two would cost a fraction of the price).

In my opinion, love should be expressed daily, all year round, not simply reserved for a single day each year. And there are plenty of ways to express romantic intent than buying gifts...

Despite this, I do find the history and mythology of Valentine's Day rather interesting. Call me a closet romantic if you will, but I do enjoy a nice love story and wouldn't object to my other half writing out a heartfelt verse in honour of the day.

So let's consider the history of Valentine's Day: why February 14th has traditionally become the day we send anonymous cards and reaffirm our love. Who was Saint Valentine, and how has his legend come to be celebrated so lavishly?

For many women, the dawn of motherhood signals a pause in their pursuit of personal development. They become nurturers, caregivers, selfless beings who when faced with a moment to themselves wonder how best to spend this time for the good of the family, rather than on themselves.

Dreams are put on hold and plans for growing the self are held off until children are older, perhaps even flown the nest... Unfortunately these women fail to understand that personal development is not a selfish treat enjoyed only by themselves, it is an important investment in family life.

Each year I notice, without planning or forward thinking: the week (or sometimes two) when the cherry blossoms bloom in their prime and beg to be appreciated.

As I'm driving around town, I find myself looking out for streets on my route which are lined with these beautiful trees and wishing our house was among them.

So what is the significance and appeal of the yearly sakura, and why is it such a great time for picnics?

When I told my husband that I wanted a Nintendo DS for Christmas, his face was a picture of utter disbelief. "Why on earth do you want one of those?" he asked. "Video games are for kids!"

Thankfully I was armed with a list of "grown-up" games I was just dying to play, not to mention the plethora of recent television adverts featuring Patrick Stewart, Fern Britton and many others besides whose fame and persuasiveness have helped a nation of adults understand that Nintendo produce enjoyable games for adults too.

So here is my list of "grown-up" games for the Nintendo DS: educational, insightful and wholly enjoyable (without a red capped Italian nor a fuzzy yellow hamster in sight).

Brain Training

I have no doubt that this must be the most popular Nintendo DS game ever to hit the shelves. Every DS-toting mommy I know has a copy of this, and with good reason too!

Dr. Kawashima promises to help develop your brain through short stimulating exercises performed daily (or when you have a few moments to spare). From reading aloud to solving quick mathematic equations, sudolu challenges and much more. Brain training is a game you can play in your coffee break and even in the few minutes waiting in the car park for your children to come out of school feeling smug in the knowledge that your memory and knowledge is improving every day.

Cooking Guide: Can't decide what to eat?

This was the first title I bought when I acquired my own DS and is known as "Personal Trainer Cooking" in the US. Far better (and easier) than using a recipe book, cooking guide takes you through each step of creating delicious recipes from around the world using visual and voice activated prompts. No more messy pages!

You can choose the recipe you want by browsing by region, ingredient and even the time taken to prepare/cook your meal. Starters, side-dishes, main meals and desserts are all included. I was impressed to find even Tunisian cous-cous as one of the recipes available which I finally learned how to cook without creating a huge sludgy mess (Hubby dearest was impressed!).

101 Classic Book Collection

With this title you can turn your Nintendo DS into a pocket sized library for all your favorite literary classics. Featuring the works of Shakespeare, Jane Austen and even Jules Verne you can hold your DS as you would a book; change the font sizes and even add bookmarks so you don't lose the place where you were reading.

Classis Book Collection offers recommended reading based on the titles you enjoyed the most, and extra content which can be downloaded by wi-fi connection. There has never been a better excuse to indulge in a little Pride and Prejudice...

Personal Yoga Training

After the success of Wii-Fit, we are starting to see physical training games appear on the Nintendo DS. Personal Yoga Training promises to help teach you the basics of yoga in just 15 minutes a day to help you relax, develop a better posture and maintain calm in your hectic life.

Walk With Me

This game has not yet been released in the UK but it is certainly a title I am looking forward to. Walk With Me will come complete with two Activity Pedometers to help track how much walking you have done each day.

Using amusing activities such as the "walk through space" and images of the world which can be uncovered when you have walked sufficient distances, this game will encourage you to take up one of the healthiest and cheapest fitness activities.

The Times Crossword Challenge

Do you love crosswords? Spare the bulky newspapers and treat yourself to the Times Crossword Challenge instead.  You can set the difficulty level to the standard most suitable for you and use either the stylus or buttons to complete your crossword challenges.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village

This list would not be complete without my all-time favorite game!

Professor Layton is a Sherlock Holmes inspired detective called to the village of St. Mystere to solve the puzzle of the Golden Apple. To progress through the game, you must solve a mind-boggling series of logical and lateral puzzles which increase in difficulty as you get closer to solving the riddle of the village.

Honestly, this game still astounds me! Between puzzles you can view beautifully animated cut-scenes, and once you've discovered the solution to the mystery you can continue play by downloading extra content via your Wi-Fi connection.

With the new year fast approaching, I've been on the lookout for a new diary/organizer to help me keep track for the family. While most diaries and personal organizers are created to help women schedule for themselves, only a few seem to offer organization for a busy family. And any mum knows just how difficult it can be to keep track of all the family's appointments! So here are three of my favorites, any one of which would be a welcome Christmas gift for a busy parent!

The "Mom Agenda Kitchen Folio"

This particular organizer is aimed as mommies in the US though it's really so useful for any mum, no matter where in the world she may live!

With this nifty organizer, you can store class lists, school schedules, sports schedules, menus and more in heavy-duty, clear plastic page protector. There are 24 interchangeable tabs so you can organize for each child or family member with ease, and there are forms for Birthdays/Anniversaries, Babysitter's Info, Medical Info, Important Phone Numbers, and more. This could easy become the organization hub for your whole family and beyond. What's more, it's delightful to look at with the pink faux lizard skin jacket!

Cost $32.95 plus postage (approx £20)

You can order the Mom Agenda from www.momagenda.com, and can download free sample pages and day planners for print from the site too.

The Dodo Household Stuff Book

This is a gem of a household book, with it's unique design and especially the usefulness of the pages contained within. The Dodo Household Stuff book has sections and pockets for every conceivable household scenario, from birthdays and anniversaries to motor maintenance and home insurance.

You can purchase this either directly from the Dodopad website, or through Amazon (which is slightly cheaper, especially when accounting for the postage costs). You can also purchase extra pages to be used with the Household Stuff book, or find a range of complementary stationary to match the Dodo design.

Cost £18.95 from Dodopad.com

Life Book Diary

Here is another beauty of a family organizer: the "Life Book" by Organized-mum.co.uk. Of the three books I've looked at here, this is the one I covet the most: aside from being incredibly useful with stickers and sections to help you keep the whole family well organised, this is beautiful to look at, heardwearing and luxurious with the optional tan leather cover!

Price: from £5.99 for the pocket diary to £28.99 with tan leather cover from Organized-Mum.co.uk

I bet the contestants had so much fun in this race, which was held in St Petersburg! The winner was awarded $3000 dollars worth of shopping vouchers. I so wish there was such a competition near me, I'd be one of the first to sign up!

Today my little man spent an "induction day" at his new comprehensive school. I was so nervous for him! He still seems too young and small to be attending comprehensive!

But he dispelled all my fears when he met me in the car park at 3pm, all smiles and gossip about how much he'd enjoyed the day. He;s already made friends with some of his classmates and feels he knows his way around the maze of corridors, which is no small feat considering the size and scale of the school!

Only six weeks of holiday to go now before he's there full time! Still, we have to get through a summer of rain before then...

Despite today being so gloomy and overcast, I took the kids to Stannington Carnival for a much deserved day out. Here's some of the pictures I took with my cameraphone (apologies for the poor quality!):

We've been going to this carnival for the past few years now, and I really love the traditional feel of this one. We found an old gypsy caravan, traditional fudge seller, a tombola and loads more. And we didn't have to spend a fortune either! Everything was reasonably priced, even the food stalls. Except for the bouncy castle, which we certainly won't be going on next year!

It's a pity so many of these summer fayre's we like to attend have been cancelled this year because of the terrible weather we've been having. Still, we always find a way to have fun!
